The History of PTV Sports

Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) started its journey on 26 November 1964. It became Pakistan’s first television broadcaster. Sports coverage was part of PTV from the very start. In the 1970s, PTV created a separate sports division within its main channel. This division covered cricket, hockey, and other national sporting events for decades.

PTV Sports later grew into its own dedicated channel. The channel began test transmission in December 2011. It officially launched on 11 or 12 January 2012 as a 24-hour sports channel. This move gave Pakistani sports fans a single destination for live sports coverage.

The channel operates from Islamabad and works under the Government of Pakistan. It broadcasts in both Urdu and English. Over the years, PTV Sports has faced tough competition from private channels. It also faced disputes over broadcasting rights, such as the 2003 conflict with the Pakistan Cricket Board over a Pakistan–New Zealand series. Despite these challenges, PTV Sports remains one of the most trusted names in Pakistani sports broadcasting today.

PTV Sports offers a wide mix of live matches, sports news, and special shows. Here are the main types of programs the channel airs:

Live Cricket Coverage:

Cricket forms the backbone of PTV Sports programming. The channel shows Test matches, One Day Internationals, and T20 games. It covers both Pakistan’s national team matches and major international tournaments.

Domestic Cricket Tournaments:

PTV Sports also broadcasts Pakistan’s domestic cricket season. This includes tournaments like the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the President’s Trophy, and the Champions One-Day Cup. These shows give local players a national audience.

Sports News and Talk Shows:

The channel runs regular sports bulletins and analysis shows. Former players and experts join these programs. They break down match highlights and discuss team performance.

Hockey Coverage:

Hockey holds a special place in Pakistani sports history. PTV Sports airs national and international hockey tournaments, including junior World Cup events.

Football Events:

PTV Sports shows top football leagues and international tournaments. Fans can catch European club football alongside global events like the FIFA World Cup.

Broadcasting Rights Acquired by PTV Sports

PTV Sports has secured many important broadcasting rights over the years. These rights allow the channel to show major tournaments live to Pakistani audiences.

ICC Cricket World Cup:

PTV Sports, working with partners like Tower Sports, has held Pakistan broadcast rights for International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments. In late 2025, the ICC confirmed PTVC as a broadcast rights partner in Pakistan through 2027. This deal covers major ICC events, including senior men’s and women’s tournaments and youth competitions.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Events:

PTV Sports secured exclusive domestic television rights for all ACC events from 2025 to 2027. This includes the Men’s Asia Cup in 2025 and 2027, the Women’s Asia Cup in 2026, and youth Asia Cup tournaments. This deal significantly strengthened the channel’s cricket lineup.

Pakistan Super League (PSL):

PTV Sports has a long history with the PSL. It shared broadcast rights with A Sports for several seasons, splitting Urdu and English feeds between the two channels. The channel returned as a PSL broadcast partner for the 2025 season alongside A Sports, after missing out on the rights for one earlier season due to the tender process.

Pakistan Home Cricket Series:

PTV has held rights to show Pakistan’s home international matches at different points, working alongside other local broadcasters. Rights for these series are awarded through competitive tenders held by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and different broadcasters have won these tenders across recent cycles.

Hockey Rights:

PTV Sports has held rights from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for major hockey tournaments, including junior World Cup events.

Football, Tennis, and Other Global Events:

The channel has broadcast rights or coverage arrangements for football leagues, tennis tournaments like the US Open and ATP events, and even entertainment sports content like WWE. It has also aired Olympic Games coverage for Pakistani viewers.
